Las Vegas Strip at Night
My first trip to Las Vegas was March 2001 and I stayed at the Excalibur. It was a busy 4 days and I took a couple pictures with my Nikon Coolpix 880 digital camera the first day as seen below. As I suspected, after the first day I was so interested in sight-seeing and gambling that picture-taking was put on the back burner, but I did get some decent shots.

I mostly played blackjack and the Wheel of Fortune $1 slots. Never playing blackjack before, I was happy that I won more than $80 one day. The slot machines (i.e. "money-eaters") soon regained control of my profit though. I also won some at the slots ($20, $40, $60, $125, $200) but of course in the end it went back into the machines over the 4-day stay.

Everything I saw in Las Vegas was bigger, better, and more glamourous than it was said to be. It's hard to see past the glitter on the strip and the casinos want it that way. You cannot go anywhere without having to pass through the entire length of at least one casino. Over-street walkways make it safer than crossing streets, but just like the trams, the walkways leave from one hotel's casino and enter another hotel through it's casino. You cannot even leave your hotel room and get a snack or coffee without passing through the casino! Many a fortune has been won and lost at the tables and slot machines in these casinos, but once you see the extravagance of everything in this town it doesn't take long to figure out who's winning in the end.

You will enjoy endless free beverages while "giving your money away" at a casino. Just give the cocktail waitress a nice tip and she'll be sure to stop back to get you as many "free" refills as you wish. Just keep in mind that "free" alcoholic beverage will most likely end up costing you about $100.

The entertainment is second to none in Las Vegas. There are dozens of local bands playing nightly in the several lounges located in most casinos which one can enjoy at no charge. In addition, there are always "headliners" playing somewhere throughout the strip. From the likes of Wayne Newton to Chicago to Bare Naked Ladies to Lou Rawls to Jerry Lee Lewis, you can see it all. Most shows have tickets available and seating and atmosphere are usually very comfortable.

There are also many showgirl-type shows, comedians, sporting events, and magicians playing nightly. During my visit I saw Folies Begere and Midnight Fantasy (tasteful topless shows with comedian at "half-time") and I attended the authentic medieval dinner show called "The Tournament of Kings" at the Excalibur. Live horses and jousting, eating groul with your hands, and world-class acting and pyro-technics make for a great show. I still prefer Midnight Fantasy over King Arthur though.........

I guess that's why Las Vegas is called the "Entertainment Capital of the World"..........well, and the "Adult Playground"

There are a lot of free attractions as well, a lot of which occur outside of the casinos to attract people in to lose their money. Treasure Island shows a pirate show, there's a live volcano which erupts every hour, and the Bellagio has a dancing water fountains show several times an hour.

I did not even have space here to mention my side trip to the Hoover Dam. It was incredible and provided some breathtaking photos as well!

If you shop around online you can get usually find relatively cheap airfare and room reservations for your trip to Las Vegas, and always get a comp card and/or join the slot club at every hotel you play at so they can track your play and send you information on casino rates or other specials on their rooms accordingly for future trips.

My first trip was such great fun that I have already scheduled another 5-night stay in May 2001! I will certainly visit Las Vegas at least once a year if things stay as much fun as they were last time!
