Round Girl in her senior year at MHS,
Janet was a member of National Honor
Society, co-editor of the Artisan and
member of numerous other organizations.
Upon graduation Janet attended Syracuse
University receiving her BS in Nursing and
went on to receive her School Nurse Teacher
Certification from the State University
of NY College at Genesco; her Doctor of
Philosophy in Nursing and her Master of
Science in Psyciatric/Mental Health Nursing
from the University of Rochester.
Janet was employed by the Veterans Administration Medical Centers from 1972 until 1988, starting as an Inservice Education Instructor, becoming Assistant Chief of Nursing Service in Batavia and Canandaigua, NY from 1983-1987. After receiving Special Advancements for Performance during employment with the VA Janet became the Director of Nursing Services at the St. John’s Healthcare Corporation, a multi-level facility offering skilled nursing, rehabilitation, mental health, dementia and special care units, in Rochester, NY, from 1988 until 2002.
In addition to her responsibilities of
managing a staff of 450 in the Nursing
Service Department at St. John’s, Janet
has co-authored four psychiatric nursing
textbooks with Ellen Janosil: “Mental Health
and Psychiatric Nursing”, 1996; “Psyciatric Nursing: A Caring Approach”,
1991; “Psyciatric Mental Health Nursing”,
1989; “Psyciatric Mental Health Nursing”,
1986. This first edition was named Book of
the Year by the American Journal of
Nursing. She has also published several
articles, been a guest lecturer for numerous
schools, served as Adjunct Professor for the
University of Rochester and St. John Fisher
College, and served on numerous thesis and
advisory committees in New York.
Janet’s impressive resume of awards and
accomplishments highlight her solid
background and contributions in nursing
education, clinical practice, research and
publication. Obviously she was adept at
building and motivating high-performance
work teams and was a proactive problem solver
in her professional life. Janet certainly
achieved a lot in her chosen profession.
It seems that Janet is now retired, living in Tucson, Arizona and enjoying horse riding! She has one brother, Robert, who graduated from Mechanicsburg in 1954.
